I seem to recall that it was revealed by a man who lived in the state
where Springfield is located. The man was black, but one time he was
gay! He lived on Baker street, IIRC.

Homer Jay Simpson.
As mentioned in the 10th season episode "D'oh-in' in the Wind".
(Wait a few months or so, and you can confirm it for yourself when it
comes out on DVD. Which brings up another interesting question: would
a hi-def disc release of the series show any significant improvement
in quality?)

No... especially with the earlier series I would imagine.

They have never been mentioned, although Bart's is supposed to be
"Jojo". Apparently, at a script reading one day, Nancy Cartwright
asked Matt Groening what Bart's middle name was; Matt asked Nancy what
she thought it should be, and when she said "Jojo", he said that
that's what it will be.

It's an old cartoon tradition:

"unless evidence exists to the contrary, all cartoon characters are
considered to have J. for a middle initial"
http://www.toonopedia.com/michigan.htm

This is "documented" somewhere in Wiki but I can't find it right now.
